What is a School Prefect?

A School Prefect is a student who has been meticulously selected to carry out certain responsibilities and duties. There are many types of prefects, including Head Girl and Boy, House Captain, Library Prefect, and so on. There are several advantages that come with this position, which include a positive addition to your CV.

Different Types of School Prefect

1. Library Prefects

Library Prefects are responsible for the school library, sometimes taking shifts there, helping students and keeping it neat and orderly. They may help organize school events related to the library.

2. Deputy Head Boy/Girl

The Deputy Head Boy and Girl serve as understudies to the Head Boy and Girl. They are high up in the school hierarchy and expected to perform similar duties. They may act as replacements for the Head when absent and assist the Head while carrying out their responsibilities.

3. Hall Monitor

Hall Monitors are responsible for keeping the halls orderly and neat. They may monitor halls during break or lunch times and can be found throughout the school.

4. Head Girl/Boy

What is Required to Become a Prefect?

To become a prefect, generally nothing is required, however your school may have a policy that bans people with a certain amount of behavior points from applying. There are certain qualities that are looked for in a prefect, such as being cooperative. Cooperation is key while being a prefect as your main duty is to look after other students and assist teachers with jobs.

You must also be helpful and well-mannered. Someone with a particularly bad record in the past will most likely not stand much of a chance of becoming a prefect as the school may think they will abuse the authority they are given, or not carry out their duties as they should be, which is also why a prefect must also be trustworthy and responsible.

Becoming a Prefect In School by Being there for students

• Be a good communicator: Communicate with students so you have a better sense of how they’re doing and what kind of help they could benefit from. If a student raises concerns to you, convey those concerns to the faculty.
• Be fair: Don’t choose favorites or target those you don’t like among the student body. Set aside your personal opinions so you can treat all students fairly and equally. Let your friends know they shouldn’t expect special treatment from you.
• Be sensitive to students’ problems: If a student is having a hard time with their classes or they’re struggling to make friends, support them, and offer to help. Don’t tease students or talk about them negatively with your friends. If a student confides in you, you should never share that information with anyone else.

How Hard is it to Become a Prefect?

If you are labeled as a well-behaved student in school who consistently tries their hardest in everything they do, you are going to be in with a much better chance than someone who is constantly in trouble with teachers. It also depends on which position you go for; some positions may be in much higher demand than others.

Role of the Prefects

Prefects are, in a sense, junior members of staff and are expected to take their role seriously. A prefect’s role is varied and to be awarded a School Prefect badge is considered to be a real privilege. A prefect’s responsibilities will include assisting in the management of the school; showing visitors around the school; working in the school office; working with classes during wet break times; helping the Headteacher with new parent afternoons and directing pupil movement at key times during the school day. The Year 6 team work with prefects to timetable their responsibilities.

How to Be a Good School Prefect by Following the Rules

• Have a good attendance record: Avoid unexcused absences and try to limit the days you miss school for being sick. Not only does missing school look bad on your part, it also prevents you from fulfilling your prefect duties.
• Be where you’re supposed to be: Don’t hang out in the hallway or leave school grounds when you’re supposed to be doing something else. As a prefect, you should be available and easy to find if students or faculty need you.
• Go to class on time: Other students will notice if you’re frequently coming to class late, so set a good example and arrive to class on time. If you have a genuine reason for being late, make sure you get a note and hand it to your teacher when you arrive to class.
• Abide by your school’s dress code: If your school has a uniform, make sure you wear it to school every day and it’s clean and wrinkle-free. If your school doesn’t have a uniform, you still want to dress in a clean and respectable manner.

How To Be A Prefect In School by Setting a Good Example

To set a good example for students around you, you’d have to demonstrate the type of character that exemplifies compassion, curiosity, awareness, and follow-through.

• Be respectful to others: Whether you’re interacting with another student, a teacher, or a member of the school faculty, be respectful. Other students will be looking to you to see what’s acceptable behavior, so set a good example for them.
• Be honest: Don’t lie to students or your teachers, and don’t make-up excuses. If you forgot to do your homework, tell the truth. Show students that being honest, even when you’re afraid of the consequences, is better than lying.
• Have a positive attitude: Try not to get frustrated or angry in front of other students. As a role model, you want to show them that optimism and a good attitude are the keys to success, even in difficult situations.
