Applications are now open for the 2026 Académie de recherche et d’enseignement supérieur (ARES) Travel Scholarships. A “Travel Scholarship” enables students to enjoy an international mobility experience in one of the 31 ARES partner countries in Africa, South America and Asia, in order to carry out research or an internship in a work placement.
Travel Scholarships Goal
- Give students the opportunity to experience mobility in one of the 31 ARES partner countries by conducting research (part or all of a dissertation or final project) or completing an internship in a work placement.
- Experience interculturality.
- Strengthen the sense of global citizenship.
Eligible Countries
South Africa, Benin, Bolivia, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cambodia, Cameroon, Cuba, Ecuador, Ethiopia, Haiti, Indonesia, Kenya, Madagascar, Mali, Morocco, Mozambique, Nepal, Niger, Uganda, Peru, Philippines, Palestinian Territory, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Republic of Guinea, Rwanda, Senegal, Tanzania, Tunisia, Vietnam, Zimbabwe.
Duration
- Minimum of 30 calendar days.
Eligibility criteria
Students must have authorisation from their institution and comply with their instructions for mobility.
In addition, the main eligibility requirements are:
- be enrolled in a Master’s degree (MA), specialised Master’s degree (MS) or Bachelor’s degree (BAC). Bachelor’s students must have earned at least 120 credits at the time of departure;
- the stay must be credited in ECTS in the student’s curriculum, either through a dissertation or final project, or through an internship;
- the student applicant is only eligible once during the same cycle of study;
- the departure must take place between 1 January and 31 August 2026;
- the stay must be covered by a contract or agreement between the student, their institution and the host organisation.

Budget
The scholarship includes:
- a “travel allowance” to contribute towards the cost of the plane ticket;
- a supplementary allowance for recipients of a study allowance from the Wallonia-Brussels Federation.
Application form
- a personalised cover letter;
- a transcript of grades for the last full academic year completed before submitting the application;
- a signed letter of recommendation from the academic supervisor in Belgium.
Application Timeline:
- 24 November – 5 December 2025: Selection of scholarship recipients from among the applicants based on the number of scholarships awarded
- From 9 December 2025: Announcement of the selection to all applicants regarding the status of their application
- 1 January to 31 August 2026: Start of mobility programmes
